I use Ning for a small, private social networking site I setup for a local group. The userbase really seems to like it, although it hasn't taken off as quickly as I hoped. It's got good basic features, themes, all the obvious things. Both user and admin UI's are fairly pretty: not quite as super-modern AJAXy as you might want, but overall nice features, even for the free version. They put an AdWords bar on the side for their free networks; you can pay monthly to have it taken off (and pay a bit more if you want to inject your own adbar, interestingly enough).
They only implement feeds for certain things. For example, you can export an Event calendar from part of a Ning site as iCal, but there's no way (I can find) to import an iCal, either statically or dynamically. It feels like they've implemented half of the cool ways to programmatically get data in (or out) of the system, but not all of them.
Don't forget, our own Brian works there too.
